After 22 years you can pretty much say we have seen it all. Usually it is a kitchen with cabinet doors or drawers that don’t close any more, nasty floor, dated appliances with magnets everywhere or small spaces that need to accommodate larger families. In addition to this we see spaces where everything was originally just plopped into a space and expected to work. Drawers collide, the standard NKBA triangle was followed whether it worked or not.
Flash forward to this project- You must see all the photos below! A little background:
The perfect location, beautiful views out of each window. A roomy grand house, neat and tidy and then there was the kitchen. Designed with all the latest and greatest cabinets, granite countertops, wood floor and every high end built in appliance you can think of. CRAMPED into a space that barely left enough room for two butts on a good day! An adjacent room that was originally a designed as a poker room had turned into a “what do you do with this room” kind of space that was now the family catch all.
Here you have before photos of the kitchen. At first glance it looks very nice. – Note the size

This is the wall we removed

See the seating space at the overhang? If you used it you would be sitting in a doorway!
By looking at these photo you realize that the photos can’t show everything because it is too Tiny! Or, because that was it! I’m just saying…
SOLUTION
What we did was simple for our crew at SCC Kitchen Bath & Home. Time consuming (10 weeks) but worth the wait for the kitchen to match the remainder of the home. First on the list was to remove a bearing wall and open the space up!

The wall is GONE!

Left side Freezer- Right side Refrigerator 60" wide!
Large format Tile floor, new beverage cooler, a mixture of painted cabinets topped off with Quartzite and granite countertops. A stylish wood hood and a marble backsplash encompass the cooktop. Wine storage area, desk and storage with room for the computer, pantry space galore, refrigerator and freezer for all the entertaining goodies and family groceries.
Multiple work spaces welcome help and allow for several tasks to be completed at one time.

Hood & Cook top----Same location-New style
Here you have it. A kitchen that fits the home and the homeowners needs. And… looks great with all the natural light we let in or mood lighting in the evening with the extra hint of elegance from the island lights.
Hire a designer that works for you, and the space! Not everyone can have a kitchen like this however when the remodel is complete the space should fit the home and the lifestyle of the owner- don’t you agree? We welcome your comments.

A happy day! You have decided to finally get that remodel project going. You have visited the SCC Kitchen Bath & Home showroom, you have called references, you have seen the quality of work that they do, and you have made your decision to get on the schedule for this springs project. Last night you picked up your design and you will finally have a place for everything in your gorgeous new space!
As you look around the room you realize the STUFF you have saved has outgrown the space. Here are some organization tips to help you get ready for the remodel you have been anticipating for years.
In every home clutter tends to build up gradually, and before you know it, a molehill has turned into a mountain. The difference is how people deal with it. But don’t fret. The best way to tackle clutter is in manageable chunks. Try doing a little bit every day; this way it won’t feel like such a chore.
Start by picking up the plastic storage containers that SCC provides for Kitchen and Bath remodels. Now, look at your new Kitchen design and how the cabinets are labeled. The items you are keeping go in the tubs. Label the tub as your new design is marked for those items. These are for the STUFF you are keeping in your new Kitchen or Bath and easily stacked in an adjacent room during the remodel process.
Next, Large plastic garbage bags (buy lots- the extras will always get used for other projects) you do not want to run out! These are for the Throw away STUFF. Now, run out into the garage and clear a spot in the corner by the door for Donation items. Put your unwanted items close to the door for easy pick up. Family, friends or neighbors may want them, and this spot makes it easy for them to grab them on their way out the next time they visit. The remainder is for the donation truck that you call when you are finished. However you must follow the golden rule: Once it is out- it does not come back in!
You have stashed and stashed waiting for that someday. Well the someday is here. The Kitchen is getting remodeled! Try to look at objects impartially and without so much emotion. Do you really need that Christmas ornament from 1992 that is stuck in the back of the junk drawer? How many spatulas does one kitchen need? Remember, you’re trying to get rid of clutter, so if you have a tendency to hold onto stuff, you have to be a little ruthless. We have heard for many of our past clients that once you start you will ask yourself why I kept it. Many homeowners getting ready for a remodel find STUFF they did not know they have. It is probably outdated and in need of repair just like your kitchen so toss it!
When you are finished you will have an inventory of all the items that are saved for the new cabinets. You may have even kept items to set out on the counters. What you will find comfort in is that you know exactly what you have, and where it is going in the new kitchen. (Remember the labeled design?)
The date of completion is here! Just as SCC Kitchen Bath & Home said, “On time and on Budget, You can plan the party”! But first it is time to put everything away. You find this is a wonderful experience because everything goes in its own designated spot just like it was designed. The new items fit in their own place. The items you kept come out of the containers and fit in the cabinets perfectly.
A well planned project! The space you always wanted. Everything has its own place.
Perfect!

Just a little Northwest of the twin cities sits a home in the perfect setting, and boasts lots of stories to tell about raising a family.
Showing wear and tear, two years ago we were called to remodel the kitchen. We thought that was it!
With the decision to stay in the community, this fall the owners called our team at SCC Kitchen Bath & Home to remodel the remainder of the house. This part of the project was finished just in time for the Holidays. The bath is part of the Owner suite we just completed.
The New Bath

- Corner tub is gone
- Walk In Shower – no door necessary
- Heated floor and towel warmer
- Soaking tub “Deep”
- Rich warm cabinetry, a built in Hamper, Carrera marble, Stone tops, and ambiance lighting.
- Separate seating area for make up
- Walk In Closet with a full closet system for 100 pairs of shoes and organization!
Room by room we are re doing the entire house.
The Next Step….
Sealed up and waiting for entertaining to be over: We put a bow on the dumpster, a wreath on the plastic doorway to the basement, and we will resume after Christmas.
We removed everything in the basement and added a new wet bar and entertainment area. We removed the old fireplace and are adding a new one in a different location that is changing from the “kid’s playroom” to the “Man Cave”. A craft room will take the place of the home office, and we are moving the laundry room to the main level. Target completion end of February!
Design and Plans are under way for an addition this spring. We will also add all new windows, new siding and screen in porch.
This is what we do! Merry Christmas Everyone!

The wall in the center of the room is an eyesore. The cabinets are falling apart.
We hear these same reasons for wanting a new kitchen all the time. To add to the list they wanted an Island for daily eating for four, a Dining space large enough to expand at Holiday gatherings, a place for the wine, better storage, and a space that functions well for multiple tasks at one time.
Not an unusual request, and typical of what SCC Kitchen Bath & Home does every day. After designing the new space, Andrea completed her selections on our showroom. The job was added to our schedule and 6 weeks after the demo of the old space we… changed the wall, Up-dated the electrical, added under-cabinet lighting. We re- finished the wood flooring, added all new Maple cabinets, a great double oven, cooktop, new hood, built in microwave, and French door refrigerator. The hood was vented to the exterior, backsplash tile added, stone countertops, new paint, furniture, and a lot of style.
Here is the Andover Minnesota Kitchen before:

Here it is today after SCC Kitchen Bath & Home. Thank you Josh and Andrea!

The New Design, all your products, complete build out, all done with care and personal service.

Summer 2012
Kitchen Remodel request: Design the space for two people to have separate work spaces.
Remove vinyl floor, cabinets, tops, hood, and peninsula. Raise window above the sink; add 36” cooktop, hood, built in Micro, and 2 built in ovens. Keep same footprint and maximize counter top space.
Here is the kitchen before

another view of the before

here is the hood and range before

Here is what SCC Kitchen Bath & Home did:
In the same footprint we changed the cabinet layout, added all new cabinets to the ceiling (10’), added a touch control 36” cook top, Vented a new 36” hood to the exterior, raised the window above the sink up. We changed the floor to a solid Maple in the kitchen through to the entry. Added dramatically colorful quartz counter tops in the new color; DORADUS. We moved the electrical in the back splash area up to under the wall cabinets so it would not interfere with the back splash pattern.
With warm colors, expert craftsmanship and only a few minor hick-ups- 7 weeks later here it is:

and then…

and…

Design, Build, Changing spaces.

We remodeled the Master bathroom in this home last year. This year is time for the kitchen to expand and become the gathering space for the large family that frequently visits.
All the design work is completed, the cabinets have been ordered, and all the appliances, tops, and fun stuff have been decided. Next month the demolition will start on the kitchen!
The plan: Remove a load bearing wall and make the space large enough for entertaining. We will remove everything and make two rooms into a fabulous kitchen with a large island, bar, computer area, all new appliances, tile floor and gorgeous cabinets and counter tops.

Here is the design for the new space. From the same angle.

The project will take 7 weeks to complete. Check back for updates.
We are designing and building better spaces for families all over the Northwest suburbs of the Twin Cities. Call me to see what we can do for you!

Create interest with contrasting colors. On the color wheel, contrasting colors are opposite from one another and while it doesn’t seem like these colors would go well together, they can. In fact, when you choose the right contrasting colors, your rooms have energy and balance. Once you understand how to use the colors together, it’s easy. All you need is a color wheel and a general idea of the colors you want to use.

At SCC Kitchen Bath & Home we start with the design. Planning the space, adding the elements and then pull it all together with the color. Sometimes the cabinets are the grounding point; sometimes it is the tile or fixtures. Whatever the colors are we make them work with the entire space and adjoining rooms to bring it all together so the entire space is inviting and interesting when you enter the room.

Home decorating schemes are worked out by means of various color harmonies. The three most used harmonies for decorating with color are monochromatic/dominant, analogous and complementary harmonies.
In monochromatic or dominant color palette, different tones of the same color are used, as in a room done in beige, tan, and brown.
Analogous color scheme is one that uses two or more consecutive colors on the color wheel, such as blue, blue-green, green.
Both monochromatic and analogous harmonies may prove lacking in an interesting contrast of color qualities.
Complementary color scheme is obtained by combining a color and its complement on the opposite side of the color wheel, as red and green.

Thought for the day:
Past belief has been that a room should progress from dark floors to somewhat lighter walls to lighter ceiling. But it is becoming popular to have the ceiling – even in period decoration – a paler tint of the wall color rather than white. When the stark white is blended, the rooms look larger and flow very nicely.
I am here to help!

1. How long will you be in your home? The answer to this question will guide you toward budget, style and issues of function. If you will be in your home less than 5 years – think in terms of resale and be conservative in your selections. Longer than 5 years, put more of “yourself” into the kitchen design to create a kitchen that works for you.

2. Speaking of personal design, that is surely where we are headed in recent years. Do the hard work up front to determine what is a habit and what is something you really desire in the kitchen. For example – do you want the dishwasher on the adjacent wall of kitchen because you are used to it or because you really like to use it in that position? Beware of kneejerk reactions – think carefully!
3. What is timeless? I think it is safe to say that classic wood species such as cherry, maple, and other, somewhat “quiet” grained woods in brown stained finishes are truly timeless, as they communicate a classic furniture quality. Whites as well are classic for kitchen cabinetry – who doesn’t love a white kitchen?
4. How to get value? Value is received, as above, in a timeless design, in timeless products and components, in quality products which will last over time. It is a sustainable way of thinking as well. Getting the maximum value of the product is only possible if it is installed properly.
5. What are cool products? Having been to many design shows, I can tell you that sinks with glass worktop covers to conceal the sink from an open kitchen are hot! Hardware in warm finishes and hardware that is more bulky in nature (more bang for the buck) works well in today’s kitchens, and of course, hardware is the jewelry of the kitchen! A warm/modern look for the kitchen is what many people are thinking about now.

6. Appliances! Appliances are becoming increasingly concealed as the kitchen floor-plan is becoming more open to surrounding rooms. Even ovens are being seen behind closed doors. Focus on the work space and hide the rest keeping easy access when you want to use it. A beautiful cabinetry facade to frame the room and hide the rest is a hot idea.
7. Social Network – The kitchen is the social hub of the house and we are seeing larger, multifunctional islands being designed into the kitchen. Easy to communicate with others and great for assisting the chef or a spot to use for entertaining purposes such as arranging wine and wine glasses on one end, islands serve endless social functions.
8. Where to start? With so many activities happening in our kitchens, write a list of all the activities you see going on in your kitchen. What is your lifestyle? How much importance and use will certain activities take on in the kitchen? Be realistic about your wants and needs, and we will make sure a functional kitchen design will follow!

9. Healthy Kitchen Design – Appliances today have healthy features! Grills, steamers, steam cooking in ovens, rotisseries, filtered water in our taps, fresher refrigerator storage, induction cooking – these are some examples of how appliances can truly work to produce and enhance a more healthy lifestyle.
10. Take your time! The kitchen was not built in a day! The more time you can shed old habits and hone in on what is really important to your family “now”, the better your kitchen will be aligned to the real “you” and then we can focus on color!
I am here to help when you are ready! – Leslie
