ISLAND – Kitchen – Bar – I want one!

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

There is nothing new about a hardworking kitchen island. A hundred years ago it was simply called a farm table. Now the old farm table has modernized and has become the newest focal point in kitchens.

Kitchen islands can range from 2 feet by 3 feet all the way to 5 feet by 12 feet, but we caution against making an island too large unless you plan to add seating. If you have the space, breaking it up into two smaller islands can make sense. One could be used for prep and the other for dining, or whatever purpose suits your family best.

So how do you choose the kitchen island that is right for you and your kitchen?
pretty

There are seemingly endless options available when designing a kitchen island. To help you get started and decide on how elaborate your island should be, here are several types of islands to consider and the items to possibly include.

What purpose do you want your island to serve?

  • Food preparation: It should be 36 inches high and include a prep sink, stove, knife storage and cutting boards.
  • Baking: It should be 30 inches high (the perfect height for rolling out dough) and include a marble countertop and a pop-up mixer stand inside a cabinet.
  • Eating: If included with a sink or cooktop;  It should be 42 inches high, which is great for open floor plans as it helps to separate the kitchen from adjoining rooms. Or, dropped to 30” height which is table height and great for children.
  • Extra storage: It’s usually 36 inches high, but can be a combination of heights and can include a wine rack or bookcases.
  • Entertainment hub: It should have bar sink, bar refrigerator, wine cooler, ice maker and dishwasher.
  • A combination of purposes: Mix and match any of the above.

What shape of island do you want?

Table

  • Its shape should conform to the size of the kitchen and improve, not impede, traffic flow.
  • Rectangle: For traditional or contemporary and everything in between.
  • Oval: For small kitchens where maneuverability is an issue.
  • Triangle or wedge: Often used in open floor-plans to separate the kitchen from the great room.
  • Horseshoe: Practical only in the largest of kitchens; good for homes with panoramic views.

How big should the island be?

  • It can be 30, 36 or 42 inches high, but can combine different levels.
  • Distance from the kitchen island to wall cabinets and appliances: Must be at least 36 inches, but preferably 42 to 48 inches.

How should the island be constructed?

Workspace

  • Most kitchen islands are made of several sizes and styles of base cabinets, all anchored to each other and the floor.
  • They can include drawer units, door units, wine racks, bookcases and appliances.
  • Islands can match the wall cabinets or be of a contrasting finish or color.
  • Electrical lines must be run to accommodate extra outlets, appliances and overhead lighting.
  • Water and drain lines must be run if they include a sink, dishwasher or ice maker.
  • For a funky, eclectic island: Use an antique furniture piece topped with a stone slab.

What kind of countertop should I choose?

Stone, Wood, Quartz, Marble,  Stainless Steel, and Tile — the choices are endless. Consider first how the island will be used. The top surface should be durable to withstand tasks. There are countertop products available that can enhance the usage of the space and be beautiful.  Making the correct decision for the use of the island will give you years of enjoyment without the worry of how the surface will perform.

 Don’t forget the edging.

edges

As with the shape of the island, the edge of the countertop can make a dynamic difference to the entire room. Be careful here. Edges reflect light, so the color of the top has a lot to do with the edge decision. Fancy special cut and layered edges are gorgeous however not comfortable for arms  if the island is used for seating.

Refreshing and Stylish change

A 25 year old kitchen.

Here it the kitchen before.  I’m also showing the before photo of the fireplace wall in the nook adjacent to the kitchen.

SCC Kitchen Bath & Home was called to make this small space feel larger, and look a bit classier. Lori wanted a calm, updated look with a soft feel to the space.

We left the existing wood floor. Did a minor change to the cabinet layout, added an apron front sink, and under cabinet lighting. We also raised the electrical outlets up to under the upper cabinets so there are no cut outs in the new backsplash tile pattern.

Adding all new appliances is what prompted this remodel in the first place. The decision was made to use wood panels on a French door refrigerator, and panel the dishwasher. We integrated the range and hood to match the cabinets. The new cabinets are a custom pebble color with a touch of a cocoa color for the island. Top it off with quartz countertops and the kitchen is quickly refreshed and ready to.

So Long to the Golden Oak Cabinets and Blue Counter Tops!

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Here it is before we started

The Golden Oak cabinets and blue counter tops are gone!  The Vinyl floor with matching blue diamond’s left with the cabinets. The appliances went to the cabin, and this new kitchen is finished!

The new Kitchen

Listening to this homeowners wants and needs; first on the list was rearranging the new kitchen for better storage. Next was warm brown cabinetry with a contemporary looking backsplash.

So here we have it. Chestnut brown stain on Custom Alder cabinets designed for tons of storage. Cleverly planning for all small appliances to have their own space in the base cabinets avoids countertops clutter.  Incorporating a double convection oven was a hit and perfect for large gatherings. We added durable flooring and an Eco friendly countertop. This transformation means quicker prep time, easier clean up and allows for everything in the kitchen to have its own space.

A speedy and refreshing remodel can make all the difference in the world for a busy family. Everything was chosen in our showroom, installed by our crew on finished time and on budget.

Home Organization- Get Rid of Clutter- Remodel

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

A happy day!  You have decided to finally get that remodel project going. You have visited the SCC Kitchen Bath & Home showroom, you have called references, you have seen the quality of work that they do, and you have made your decision to get on the schedule for this springs project. Last night you picked up your design and you will finally have a place for everything in your gorgeous new space!

As you look around the room you realize the STUFF you have saved has outgrown the space.   Here are some organization tips to help you get ready for the remodel you have been anticipating for years.

In every home clutter tends to build up gradually, and before you know it, a molehill has turned into a mountain. The difference is how people deal with it. But don’t fret. The best way to tackle clutter is in manageable chunks. Try doing a little bit every day; this way it won’t feel like such a chore.

Start by  picking up the plastic storage containers that SCC provides for Kitchen and Bath remodels. Now, look at your new Kitchen design and how the cabinets are labeled. The items you are keeping go in the tubs. Label the tub as your new design is marked for those items. These are for the STUFF you are keeping in your new Kitchen or Bath and easily stacked in an adjacent room during the remodel process.

Next, Large plastic garbage bags (buy lots- the extras will always get used for other projects) you do not want to run out! These are for the Throw away STUFF. Now, run out into the garage and clear a spot in the corner by the door for Donation items. Put your unwanted items close to the door for easy pick up. Family, friends or neighbors may want them, and this spot makes it easy for them to grab them on their way out the next time they visit. The remainder is for the donation truck that you call when you are finished. However you must follow the golden rule: Once it is out- it does not come back in!

You have stashed and stashed waiting for that someday.  Well the someday is here. The Kitchen is getting remodeled! Try to look at objects impartially and without so much emotion. Do you really need that Christmas ornament from 1992 that is stuck in the back of the junk drawer? How many spatulas does one kitchen need? Remember, you’re trying to get rid of clutter, so if you have a tendency to hold onto stuff, you have to be a little ruthless. We have heard for many of our past clients that once you start you will ask yourself why I kept it.   Many homeowners getting ready for a remodel find STUFF they did not know they have. It is probably outdated and in need of repair just like your kitchen so toss it!

When you are finished you will have an inventory of all the items that are saved for the new cabinets. You may have even kept items to set out on the counters. What you will find comfort in is that you know exactly what you have, and where it is going in the new kitchen. (Remember the labeled design?)

The date of completion is here! Just as SCC Kitchen Bath & Home said, “On time and on Budget, You can plan the party”! But first it is time to put everything away. You find this is a wonderful experience because everything goes in its own designated spot just like it was designed. The new items fit in their own place. The items you kept come out of the containers and fit in the cabinets perfectly.

A well planned project! The space you always wanted. Everything has its own place.

Perfect!

Perks of Remodeling with SCC Kitchen Bath & Home  an interview.

A complete home makeover

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Just a little Northwest of the twin cities sits a home in the perfect setting, and boasts lots of stories to tell about raising a family.

Showing wear and tear, two years ago we were called to remodel the kitchen. We thought that was it!

With the decision to stay in the community, this fall the owners called our team at SCC Kitchen Bath & Home to remodel the remainder of the house. This part of the project was finished just in time for the Holidays. The bath is part of the Owner suite we just completed.

The New Bath

  • Corner tub is gone
  • Walk In Shower – no door necessary
  • Heated floor and towel warmer
  • Soaking tub “Deep”
  • Rich warm cabinetry, a built in Hamper, Carrera marble,  Stone tops, and ambiance lighting.
  • Separate seating area for make up
  • Walk In Closet with a full closet system for 100 pairs of shoes and organization!

Room by room we are re doing the entire house.

The Next Step….

Sealed up and waiting for entertaining to be over:  We put a bow on the dumpster, a wreath on the plastic doorway to the basement, and we will resume after Christmas.

We removed everything in the basement and added a new wet bar and entertainment area. We removed the old fireplace and are adding a new one in a different location that is changing from the “kid’s playroom” to the “Man Cave”.  A craft room will take the place of the home office, and we are moving the laundry room to the main level.   Target completion end of February!

Design and Plans are under way for an addition this spring. We will also add all new windows, new siding and screen in porch.

This is what we do!    Merry Christmas Everyone!

Small Kitchen. A Makeover- Maple Grove, MN

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Besides being the name of our remodeling business, SCC means Such Care for Complete detail!

With breathtaking results!

Quickly started and finished on time and on budget by our own staff at SCC Kitchen Bath & Home.

Here are two  “Before” photos—small kitchen with typical cabinets lacking storage, and style to match the owner’s lifestyle. Another problem is the dated appliances.

Now the “After” –

There’s the horizontal backsplash running around the kitchen walls. The cabinets are custom-made Birch stained in a coffee lover’s color: “Espresso”. We upgraded the refrigerator and oven to stainless steel and added a matching built-in microwave.  The countertop is a fav of Leslie’s in Silestone Lagoon to pair up with the tile.  We installed an undermount single sink made of Siligranit with a polished chrome faucet: how beautiful this all pulled together.

Contrast in color and a perfect install make a dramatic statement in this kitchen where we ran the cabinets to the ceiling adding extra storage and topped off the cabinets with a 3” custom crown:

The most popular house around!

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

So excited!

I have started the unique design for Christy’s basement remodel.  It is currently a finished basement but Christy is seeking our help to liven up the old look. That means we are going to do a full demo which will give me a clean palette to start over. Family and friends are anxious to see the end result by Spring as this is “the summer place to be” in Elk River and Lake parties are plentiful.

Here is a sneak peek at the Backsplash tile for the wet Bar!

We will add heated (yes, heated!) tile floor, cabinetry (I am planning a round bar!)  At the top of the “wants”  list is adding a walk-out door to the lakeside of the house which means our SCC crew will be cutting through the block wall and adding a Patio door. Hummm- not the simplest thing to do- but Steve will figure it out.  I also plan to add a Beer Keg spout for the many parties they have. How handy will that be — to access the keg from indoors OR outdoors!

They’ll get a media room, fun lighting and an updated bathroom—-

Here is the tile  for the  bathroom shower and I am incorporating it into a wall at the base of the stairs.

We will use just the right shades of Buff (the new Yellow), Brown and White as an accent against the grey to brighten the space. This is perfect for the white enamel trim.

We remodeled Christy’s Kitchen, Entry & Porch 4 years ago. ( Island chandeliers with beads and crystals) We are proud to complete the remodel on this home.

Another Kitchen Remodel Summer 2012

Thursday, September 6th, 2012

The wall in the center of the room is an eyesore. The cabinets are falling apart.

We hear these same reasons for wanting a new kitchen all the time.  To add to the list they wanted an Island for daily eating for four, a Dining space large enough to expand at Holiday gatherings, a place for the wine, better storage, and a space that functions well for multiple tasks at one time.

Not an unusual request, and typical of what SCC Kitchen Bath & Home does every day. After designing the new space, Andrea completed her selections on our showroom. The job was added to our schedule and 6 weeks after the demo of the old space we… changed the wall, Up-dated the electrical, added under-cabinet lighting. We re- finished the wood flooring, added all new Maple cabinets, a great double oven, cooktop, new hood, built in microwave, and French door refrigerator. The hood was vented to the exterior, backsplash tile added, stone countertops, new paint, furniture, and a lot of style.
