Every once in a while, we have a customer walk into our showroom that knows exactly what they want. This is the case for Wendy and Brads Kitchen.

The wants and needs list was all completed. This homeowner had done an excellent job in researching all the elements to go into the new kitchen.

Here is the Kitchen Before

The quest for the Brooklyn Park Kitchen Remodel was to re arrange the cabinets for better storage. Increase the walk space between the wall areas and the island, and design the new kitchen without the dinette table and pendant light in front of the patio door.  It was imperative that we design the space to accommodate an island to seat a family of five.  Here is a check list of the remaining must have items:

• Keep the previously purchased appliances.
• New White cabinet’s not bright white but a pleasing warm color of white.
• White – Subway style 2 x 4 tiles for the backsplash.
• Under cabinet lighting and additional recessed lights.
• Match the wood floor keeping the 10-year old pre- finished Oak.
•  Black countertops in a quartz material.
• Preferably a farm sink, with a simple faucet without allot of gadgets.
• Figure a way to add additional storage.
• Possibly add a glass cabinet door with interior lighting as simple touch.
• The color of the walls was pre-determined to pull in the colors of the adjoining room and the new curtains.
• The hardware was to be a mixture of knobs and cup pulls to match the style of the space.

The hitches: finding a floor to match the pre- finished ten year old floor, and a suggestion to not use the new microwave/hood they had just purchased.  In order to use the one they had, it would be too high for the children to use, and not safe if something was cooking on the stove.

Solution: We found the floor. Not an easy task. Over time the existing floor has changed color, so we laced it into an inconspicuous spot and in a short time the new floor will mellow to match the existing. We designed the space for a wood hood to match the cabinetry, and the decision was made to purchase a new microwave and place it in the island so the kids can safely use it.

Tweaks and Changes: Finish the island with a complimentary color that resembles Carrara stone, and blend perfectly with the black tops on the remainder of the kitchen.

In Carols new basement bar area we are adding a furniture piece that is actually wine and beverage cold storage in a beautiful cabinet.

In Monica and Jerry’s Kitchen we removing all the surrounding walls, adding an Island, and creating the dream kitchen they have always wanted. This is the faucet we will be putting in the main sink.

Kathryn has a elegant kitchen remodel planned. We have completed the design and I am looking for the perfect  backsplash tile to enhance the space. Here are the tiles we are choosing from

We finished Julies powder room and now we are designing the Master Bath.  I put this drawer in a bathroom vanity last fall. It works so wonderfully that we are adding it to Julie’s make up vanity.

I found this faucet and have ordered it for a display in our showroom. It is a classy little number and I can’t wait to use in a remodel project.

 We removed everything in this Plymouth MN basement bath. The goal was to add a new shower with tile to the ceiling, a place to keep shampoos and bath items off the floor, and a clear frameless shower door.

We wanted the space to have a free standing vanity with a modern stylish sink on a countertop that used color from the tile.

Going in Greta’s bathroom

This out-of-this-world look faucet is an attention-grabber. The faucet features fluid curves intended to represent the idea that life is a cycle. The futuristic looking fitting integrates RGB LED lighting to indicate water temperature through a colorful ring at the base of the faucet. Crafted with full brass, the faucet is available in chrome, white or powder-coated matte black.   We will be installing the Black one.

Olivia’s Laundry / pet room / garden room

This is a Rustique farmhouse sink cabinet. This is designed to bring the popular sink style to other parts of the home, such as a small bath or a garden/utility room; the cabinets are customized to any size farmhouse sink. Pictured above is a Northern White Cedar base surrounding a natural front farmhouse sink in solid black granite.  Perfect to replace the laundry tub, and wash the dog!

Debs backsplash tile

Waterworks Studio collection has expanded to include four tile lines—this is wonderful to compliment a range of styles from traditional to modern. With a light color palette of whites, gray,  and creams, This tile  has a fresh, clean look, while retaining quintessential elements of traditional architecture, transitioning into a 21st century style. Some of these are thicker tiles with edging, detailing and patterns to add definition.  I can’t wait for Mike to do this install next month in Debs Kitchen backsplash. We will be mixing them with a similar sized plain white tile. Watch for photos.

How often do you feel that your house requires additional space? The basement is perfect for additional bedroom, an extra bath, guest room or a fabulous home theater area.

One can always look inside the house for the additional space. It is how you plan it out that makes the difference.

Crucial decision

What do you add? What has to be moved or changed to get what you want? There is nothing worse than feeling like it has to be a certain way because that is how it is already, or it is a new basement and you just assume it is to be finished a certain way because some of the studs are already up.  One of the most important things to consider is- PLAN, PLAN, and PLAN.

THE BASEMENT BATHROOM- new or existing

Almost always, the basement has a bathroom. Most new homes are sold with a rough in area for the future bath. Older homes may already have a SEMI bath set up. Either way the plumbing has to be planned. The most important step in plumbing a basement bathroom is to make sure you have properly vented the new plumbing system. If a system is not vented properly, you will likely not be aware until the remodel is complete. Fixing such a problem would involve a complete tear out of any work that had been previously completed. The most common problem we have seen in existing baths is a foul odor coming up from the old shower drain. A shower has a p-trap that is located below the concrete slab. In some cases, even if you have a trap installed the sewer gas can still make its way to the living space. If another component of the plumbing system has not been vented properly it may siphon the p-trap dry, allowing sewer gas to seep into the living space. This may involve tearing up the concrete floor. We anticipate this in every basement bath project we do. Not a problem for a professional crew. This is why we know SCC can adjust any space to put in what you want.

LIGTHTING

Basements are known to have minimal natural lighting. Sometimes, the height restrictions don’t allow you to install the lighting of your choice. “Can Lights” are one of the best options to overcome this handicap. Hidden cove lighting is a great way to accent a certain area, and wall sconces add additional touches. Either way plan ahead to add more than you think you need. You will be glad you did it when you start using the space.

FLOORING

Selecting a basement floor can be an overwhelming part of your basement finishing project. Many different materials are available- carpet, tile, laminate, engineered wood and others. We coordinate the flooring with the planned use of the space. We help you choose materials that will wear well and enhance the space.  Here are some important points we keep in mind when we help you make these decisions.

First of all you will need to determine how well your flooring will have to hold up to traffic and moisture. The material you choose will also have a great impact on the look, feel and overall warmth of the space.

CARPET

Wall to wall style carpeting will be the warmest option. The carpet and pad will act as an insulator from the cold concrete underneath.

LAMINATE / ENGINEERED FLOORING

Laminate and engineered flooring are very beautiful and look great in a basement. The material and installation is more expensive than carpet but usually cheaper than using a ceramic tile.

Laminate is essentially sawdust and glue. It is made under great pressure and a lot of heat. The laminate finish is a picture of wood covered with a tough coating. It is extremely durable, looks great and is easy to care for.

Engineered wood is a real finish on top of a plywood core. It can scratch just as a conventional hardwood floor.

Both materials are installed over a pad and “float.” What this means is that the floor adheres only to itself, either with glue or the flooring pieces lock together. The floor is not attached to any of the walls. This allows for expansion and contraction of the material as temperatures fluctuate.

Laminate and engineered flooring will not be as cold as tile due to the pad underneath. It will not be as warm as carpet.

We don’t recommend installing any hardwood flooring in the basement in Minnesota for 2 reasons: (1) the humidity changes too much. And (2) you’ll need to install some sort of subfloor to anchor the hardwood to. (equals- additional costs / doesn’t work well with a low ceiling)

TILE and Vinyl

Vinyl tile are the most durable choices for your floor. If water happens, no problem. Just mop up and you’re done. Both durable, come in many color choices, and are on opposite ends of the budget wheel which gives you options. Tile has several advantages because you can choose the tile pattern, tile sizes and add in floor heat and make the floor toasty warm in any or all areas.

Whatever floor style choices you make, very often some compromise is necessary. Weigh all your options according to what sort of durability and comfort you need that will fit your budget. And remember we will help you plan! And then,  sit back and let us do all the work for you!

Happy Valentines Day from SCC

Since Valentine’s day is just around the corner it brings to mind a comment that is made once we sit down and start planning a new space for our homeowners. Usually this comes up when we are answering questions about the master bath and bedroom.

–Men don’t want a frilly bathroom

Romantic Style – The Feminine and Masculine Touch–This style lends itself to other clean styles, like contemporary or English country. It does well in a single room makeover or throughout the entire house. Many assume that a Romantic style is frilly and fancy, full of flowers and pink colors. Well, I’m here to tell you that it does not have to be that way. Yes, colors should be soft, but you can forgo the roses and pinks for blues or greens in stripes instead. For the masculine touch, bring in darker tones, and mix them with colors that enhance your own personal coloring. It can be something that says ‘a man lives here.’ It can carry its own fabric pattern or even its own style of furniture. A master suite is the perfect place to combine both feminine and masculine pieces of furniture. How about a four-poster bed, a chenille spread, and embroidered pillows? Make the floors hardwood with a jute rug at bedside and a captain’s trunk at the foot of the bed. Integrate the bath into the space with separate furniture style vanities and matching mirrors in dark toned woods, simple tiles, and a large spacious shower.

   The idea is to bring in a little romance by way of colors, lighting, and both feminine and masculine elements. Now that’s romantic.
